Ayurveda is the oldest system of healing known to exist on our planet. Although no one knows exactly when Ayurveda began, it is widely accepted that Ayurveda originated on the continent of India near the Himalayan mountains between 3,500 to 5,000 years ago. Sanskrit is the original language of Ayurveda. The word "Ayurveda" is a Sanskrit term formed from two words: Ayur and Veda. In Sanskrit, Ayur means life and Veda means knowledge (as in vast and extensive). Combined they form Ayurveda which means the knowledge of life

The wisdom of Ayurveda is timeless. As a medical science, Ayurveda is completely natural and holistic. The purpose of Ayurveda is to restore the health of a sick person, and to maintain the health of a healthy person.

Ayurveda teaches that "like increases like" and that "opposites cure." In the west, Ayurveda remained virtually unknown until the later part of the 20th century. Today, Ayurveda is blossoming throughout the world as a system of healing which provides answers for why people get sick and direction for improving one's health.

Ayurveda is unlike western medicine which relies on medicines and invasive measures to treat symptoms. Instead, Ayurveda relies on nature to provide curative remedies which treat the entire person: body, mind, and spirit.

There are eight branches within the totality of Ayurveda:
  1. Internal Medicine
  2. Ears, Nose, and Throat
  3. Toxicology
  4. Pediatrics
  5. Surgery
  6. Psychiatry
  7. Aphrodisiacs
  8. Rejuvenation
Ayurveda is also known as the medical branch of Yoga.

Ayurveda maintains within its wisdom certain fundamental concepts which work together to form the basis for Ayurveda. They include:
    1. Pancha Mahabhutas - The Five Great Elements
    2. Gunas - The 20 Attributes
    3. Doshic Theory - 3 primary doshas, 15 subdoshas
    4. Samprapti - The Process of Disease
    5. Dhatus - Bodily Tissues and their process of digestion
    6. Srotamsi - the subtle rivers of the body
    7. Ojas - Tejas - Prana: Immunity, metabolic function, vitality
    8. Ama - toxicity
