HEALTH

What is health? The great Ayurvedic physician of ancient times, Charaka, said that "abnormality (disorder) is disequilibrium of the dhatus (bodily tissues) and their equilibrium is normalcy (health). Health is known as happiness while disorder is unhappiness" (Charaka Samhita Vol. 2, 9:4).

The great Ayurvedic surgeon of ancient times, Sushruta, said that "A person who is established in the Self, who has balanced doshas, balanced agni (digestive fire), properly formed dhatus (bodily tissues), proper elimination of malas (urine, feces, sweat), well functioning bodily processes, and whose mind, soul, and senses are full of bliss, is called a healthy person" (Sushruta Samhita, 15.38).

From these definitions Ayurveda teaches us that health is not merely the absence of symptoms, illness, or disease. To remain healthy throughout our life requires daily practice, focus, commitment, and intention. There are many people who do not care about their health, so they do not pursue health. Ayurveda is a gift to humanity for its wisdom and teachings give us guidance to follow the path to a life of health, happiness, and longevity.
